2016 Design Trends: From High Point to the Home Show

IMG_1035Your intrepid reporter got the chance to go the High Point Furniture Market this fall and got the scoop on all the latest trends in the design industry, and also learned how important it is to book a hotel early (see the tragic consequences at the end of the post). We featured of some of the hottest ideas at the Red Chair Design Showcase as the Home and Garden show last month but in case you didn’t make it, here’s what all the cool kids are doing right now.

Lucite – Not Just for Liberace Any More!

Clear is everywhere, just be careful not to trip over it. Along with adding a sense of glam, Lucite is a great way to make a room feel less cluttered. Queen of Glam Ginger Maney of Home Designed Interiors had TWO pieces of Lucite at her booth at the home show. It’s a more usable trend than you’d think, just don’t go overboard, nobody can get away with a whole roomful of Lucite except, perhaps, the man himself.

Agate

This swirly mineral is the stone-of-the-moment. It comes in all sorts of colors and can be used in all sorts of different ways.  One of the most stunning uses I’ve seen is this wall panel from Resource Decor.  But if you’re not ready for this, April Aduddell of April Interiors showed off a couple of easy-on-the-budget ways to integrate it in her display at the Home Show.

Living Walls

No, these aren’t features in a haunted house. They’re vertical gardens that can be done inside or outside, real or faux, large or small. Liz Balloutine of Seedlings Gardening had a few smaller examples at the Show, and is also working on a wall-sized one for a client right now, complete with plumbing.

Fabulous Faux Fur

Another trend that can be Liberace-worthy, but doesn’t have to make the man-cave denizen cringe.   April showed off some fluffy fur pillows and a throw at her booth, and there were some great fur rugs at the Loloi booth at High Point.

Architectural Furniture

Think inside-out, with the structure showing. This can make furniture look lighter and more sleek, but can also be chunky like the awesome Eiffel-tower chair below.

So now you’re all set to update your home!  Need a pro to help put it all together? Talk to one of the Red Chair Workroom designers.  They can help you integrate these ideas without blowing up your whole house.  And they have access to some of the trade-only products you see here.   Happy decorating!
